Photography has been a source of inspiration and a sense of connection to people and places that have left a lasting imprint on my soul.
Throughout the years, technology has changed, and photography styles have changed. However, one thing that has never changed but has grown stronger is my passion for capturing the essence of the moment, the timelessness of a smile, and the beauty of something as simple as a flower petal.
I love photographing High School Seniors, Families, Children, Pets, and Branding/Personal Concepts. I am also quite passionate about travel and gardening. I am a true wanderlust at heart.
I am truly blessed and grateful for this wonderful life and never take it for granted. I cherish my family, my husband Paul of 28 years, and our two sons Eric (25) and Ryan (24).

Kai Photography? What is Kai?
The business name "Kai Photography" came to me while sitting on a beach in Hawaii. I was in awe of the water and discovered that the Hawaiian word "Kai", means Ocean/Sea. I love how creating memories will be looked at immediately, then will be put away. When those images are looked at again, it's almost the same feeling you get, compared to when waves roll in and out from the ocean. It's calming but very exciting. It makes you appreciate them every time you look at them.
As I pondered the word Kai, I came to the realization that the many meanings of this word describe who I am or things I love-
Japanese- "shell"
Burmese-"unbreakable" "strong"
Navajo-"willow tree"
Swahilli-"loveable"
Old Latin- “happy”
Swedish-"rejoice"
Wayuu-"sun"
As I was thinking about rebranding my business (previously Susan Jergens Photography) I thought this name was perfect.
What equipment do I use?
I have a Nikon D850, D810, J5 and my F100 (film camera for travel). I actually started my business with this same camera !! and had used a medium format film camera back in the day.
My lenses include: Nikon 50mm f/1.4, Nikon 85 mm f/1.4, Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8, Sigma Art 35mm f/1.4, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, Sigma 50mm macro f/ 3.4 and a Sigma 50-100mm f/1.8. I also use Profoto and Westcott lights. I love natural light photography but sometimes you need to add light.
How long have I been a photographer?
It all started with my son Eric, when he was a baby and has continued all throughout my 30's 40's and now into my 50's!! (I swear I don't act my age)
Do you work with businesses?
Yes I do!!! I offer branding and business headshots. I can come to your place of business with my portable studio. I also offer studio sessions at my home. If you need e-commerce photos for your website, I'm your girl!
I am also a firm believer in giving back. I have volunteered my photography in the past to the Humane Society of Westland and Haven Shelter from Domestic Violence. If you know of a good charity who could use some photos, then please let me know.
